Wastewater analysis is an important area in analytical and environmental chemistry. It can be performed with both the classic wet methods and instrumental techniques. The development of new methods, and modification of the existing ones, constitute a major task for researchers. Ion chromatography plays a predominant role in ion determinations with the instrumental methods. It offers several advantages over the conventional methods, such as simultaneous determinations of alkali and alkaline earth cations and ammonia. Ammonium ions cannot be determined by spectroscopic methods. Ion chromatography has been accepted world-wide as a reference method for analyzing anions and cations in water and wastewater due to the fact that it enables the replacement of several individual wet chemistry methods for common ions with one instrumental technique. The following article describes the principles of ion chromatography, such as stationary phases, eluents, detectors, and sample preparation methods. Moreover, the applications of ion chromatography in wastewater analyses and international standards are presented.

Review Recent developments in the high-performance chelation ion chromatography of trace metalsThere have been a number of significant developments in the high-performance chelation ion chromatography (HPCIC) of trace metals in recent years. This review focuses on these developments, while giving important information on the fundamental parameters controlling the chelation sorption mechanism, including type of chelating group, stability constants, kinetics, and column temperature. The discussion pays particular attention to the types and properties of efficient chelating stationary phases which have been fabricated for certain groups of metals. The review also describes a number of major improvements in postcolumn reaction detection including the use of the latest reagents and noise reduction strategies to improve sensitivity and reduce LOD. In the final section, an indication of the applicability of HPCIC to a range of complex sample types is given with some key examples and chromatograms using the latest high-efficiency chelating phases.

This review focuses on the ion chromatographic methods for the analyses of natural waters with high ionic strength. At the beginning a natural diversity in ionic composition of waters is highlighted and terminology clarified. In continuation a brief overview of other review articles of potential interest is given. A review of ion chromatographic methods is organized in four sections. The first section comprises articles focused on the determination of ionic composition of water samples as completely as possible. The sections-Selected Anions, Selected Cations and Metals-follow. The most essential experimental conditions used in different methods are summarized in tables for a rapid comparison. Techniques encountered in the reviewed articles comprise: direct determinations of ions in untreated samples with ion-or ion-exclusion chromatography, or electrostatic ion chromatography; matrix elimination with column-switching; pre-concentration with a chelation ion chromatography and purge-and-trap pre-concentration. Different detection methods were used: non-suppressed conductometric or suppressed conductometric, direct spectrometric or spectrometric after a post-column derivetization, and inductively coupled plasma in combination with optical emission or mass spectrometry.Keywords: ion chromatography; sea water; brine; mineral water; anions; cations; metals Natural Diversity of WatersWe restrict the scope of this review and choose to focus on natural waters with high ionic strength in which concentrations of ions extend over several orders of magnitude and therefore these waters present a special challenge for ion chromatographic (IC) analysis, especially if major and minor ions OPEN ACCESS
