The detection ofTrypanosoma cruziby nested-PCR in elderly patients: relationship to the clinical and epidemiological profile

Abstract: Chagas disease, which is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted primarily by triatomine bugs, although the incidence of new cases has decreased as a result of vector control. In Brazil, most of those affected have the chronic form of the disease and are generally elderly individuals who require appropriate clinical follow-up. In this work, we undertook a descriptive study in which 85 patients were interviewed and blood samples were collected for molecular analyses based on the amplification of parasite sa… Show more

“…The number of elderly travellers differed between European countries and ranged between 83.7% in Denmark and only 11.0% in Bulgaria [12]. In the study performed by Gautret et al [11], 49.1% of tourists aged 60 years and over were from Europe, 36.4% from North America and 6.7% from Asia. Destinations chosen by senior travellers are also important; travel to developing countries has become increasingly popular.…”

“…What is more, the clinical interaction between CD and other age-related illnesses may increase mortality and morbidity and may reduce the quality of life. Indeed, morbidity rates among the elderly are higher in comparison with other age groups [47][48][49]. Pereira et al [49] highlighted that the elderly patients with CD need special attention from healthcare providers and that further studies in this group of patients are necessary.…”

“…In Brazil, there are approximately 5,700 kidney transplants each year [13], with a progressive increase for this intervention in elderly patients because of renal disease [14]. This scenario favors reactivation of the disease since most patients with chronic Chagas disease are elderly and present a variety of comorbidities [15][16][17].…”

“…Most of the strategies for the evaluation of T. cruzi transmission, epidemiology and control are dependent on methods of detection in tissues. Samples from humans [3] [4], animal models [5] [6] [7] and Triatominae insects [8] [9] have been exhaustively analyzed for elucidation of mechanisms and control of Chagas disease.…”
