“…Previous studies in other model systems have shown that a decrease in tissue glycogen stores is correlated with the length of time of exposure to oxygen deprivation ( Rose et al 1965 ; Uniacke and Hill 1972 ; Hems and Whitton 1980 ). Apart from canonical pathways directly involved in glycogen synthesis and destruction, however, the genetic regulation of glycogen metabolism in metazoans has remained relatively unexplored.…”

“…When the cornea is exposed to a hypoxic environment, ATP synthesis shifts to the anaerobic glycolysis pathway (Riley and Winkler BS, 1990). In the cells, the stored glycogen is immediately phosphorylated for use as an additional energy source (Uniacke and Hill, 1972; Uniacke et al, 1972). Additional energy sources are necessary for ATP synthesis via the anaerobic glycolysis pathway, as it requires more energy sources than the aerobic glycolysis pathway.…”

“…To control for possible cham¬ ber effects, 15 corneas exposed to air within the chamber were compared with normal corneas having no chamber time, and were found to be neither anatomically nor histochemically different. 1 Histochemistry.-The frozen corneal halves were sectioned sagitally at 12µ thickness, then exposed to a sodium lactate solution substrate2 that stained for LDH presence. A photomicrograph was then made of each section with a photomicro¬ scope with identical flux exposure condi¬ tions, and a film having the same emulsion lot number throughout.…”
