The cuticular wax inhibitor locus Iw2 in wild diploid wheat Aegilops tauschii: phenotypic survey, genetic analysis, and implications for the evolution of common wheat

Abstract: BackgroundCuticular wax production on plant surfaces confers a glaucous appearance and plays important roles in plant stress tolerance. Most common wheat cultivars, which are hexaploid, and most tetraploid wheat cultivars are glaucous; in contrast, a wild wheat progenitor, Aegilops tauschii, can be glaucous or non-glaucous. A dominant non-glaucous allele, Iw2, resides on the short arm of chromosome 2D, which was inherited from Ae. tauschii through polyploidization. Iw2 is one of the major causal genes related … Show more

“…In these genotyping data were included two EST-derived sequence-tagged site markers, TE6 and WE6, that were developed with the Iw2-linked markers (Liu et al, 2007;Nishijima et al, 2014). Some single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, which were converted to cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) or high resolution melting (HRM) markers, were also included to enrich the number of markers.…”

“…In recent years, several reports have furthered the characterization of these loci, including fine-mapping of Iw1 (11), demonstrating Iw1 suppression of β-diketone wax accumulation (17), fine mapping of Iw2 in Ae. tauschii (12), comparative mapping of Iw1 and Iw2 in hexaploid wheat (18), determining the impact of W and Iw loci on glaucousness and cuticle permeability (3), and fine mapping of W1 in hexaploid wheat (19). The synthesis and chemistry of diketone waxes has been studied extensively in barley, chiefly through the characterization of loss-of-function mutants of three tightly linked loci collectively referred to as "Cer-cqu" (2,20,21).…”
