Purpose This paper aims to examine the relationships between socioeconomic development, renewable energy and the innovative process by providing: a descriptive analysis; a co-occurrence analysis of terms, thematic mapping and conceptual structure; and the typology of the textual corpus. Design/methodology/approach To analyze the relationship between “renewable energies, socioeconomic development and the innovative process,” it is necessary to build a theoretical foundation that contains the relevant scientific studies and reflects the current state of the art on the subject. For this, this study developed a systematic literature review (SLR) using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses research protocol to answer the relationship on the theme. Findings Research shows a global understanding of the need to invest in developing studies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve economic growth. The main contributions lie in providing a typology of the state of the art, identifying the joint relationships between themes, insights into the key themes and indicating themes that must be developed. This study may also support future empirical studies as it provides a theoretical foundation for formulating hypotheses, which can be tested through qualitative and quantitative approaches. Originality/value The innovative character consists of addressing a shortage of SLRs on this theme. Thus, this paper fills this gap by providing a theoretical foundation for future scientific and academic knowledge generation. Furthermore, regarding the interdisciplinary aspects of this research as contributions, this paper presented different approaches and theoretical perspectives.

In this research, the diesel–palm fatty acid distillate ethyl ester–hydrous ethanol, palm fatty acid distillate ethyl ester, and diesel were studied to investigate the gas emissions and performances of the direct injection diesel engine at different engine loads and engine speeds. At all engine speeds and loads, nitrogen oxide emissions from all fuel blends (D50PE40E10, D40PE50E10, and D30PE60E10) were significantly lower than the baseline diesel. At all engine speeds and engine loads, the fuel blends released less carbon dioxide than the baseline diesel, with the exception of the D30PE60E10 blend. Furthermore, D30PE60E10 diesel was used to test wear for 500 h long-term endurance of diesel engine components. The results indicated that biodiesel in fuel blends may reduce engine component wear by forming a thin coating on the metal surface of the engine component. However, after 100 h of continuous operation with D30PE60E10 blend, the engine cannot be restarted because only a part of the fuel pump had many pores on the surface of the plunger, barrel, delivery valve, and valve holder. However, these components may have to be considered to prevent corrosion when this fuel blend was employed.

In comparison to ethanol biofuel, butanol is considerably less corrosive, permitting the utilization of existing infrastructures used to ship gasoline or diesel for its distribution. Less corrosive also means that butanol can be utilized with no engine alteration. If butanol is mixed with water, it is less likely to split from the main fuel, thus facilitating the storage and distribution of blended fuels. Butanol also comprises a comparable energy content to petrol fuel, with 25% more energy density/liter as opposed to ethanol. All these excellent qualities have led to higher engine performance, enabling the vehicles to achieve higher mileage using butanol with no significant issue. Several challenges and future research directions are discussed and in the last section of this review article, we emphasize the importance of an optical engine to diagnose engine combustion in more detail. The consequence of using butanol on spark ignition engine on cold start and knock phenomena are also worth investigating. Results on the spray, the pressure inside the cylinder, rate of heat release, and detonation are thus required.
