The Broken Health Information Technology Innovation Pipeline: A Perspective from the NODE Health Consortium

Abstract: Background: The Network of Digital Evidence (NODE) was formed to further advance the field of health information technology (HIT) and evidence-based digital medicine at different healthcare institutions nationwide. As the NODE network reviewed the state of the field, it was noted that despite substantial financial and human capital investments, the processes and results of HIT innovation seem chaotic and subpar, especially in comparison to the more well-established drug and device industries. “…In light of the many unique dimensions of digital health technology, Table 1 presents questions to consider when initiating or progressing with a phased trial process. These questions have been informed by the experience of NODE.Health in validating digital medicine technologies [47, 5659], and by industry-sponsored surveys of digital health founders, health systems leaders, or technology developers [60, 61]; or other industry commentary [46, 62].…”

“…While the quantitative impact of these digital solutions is still yet to be determined [2], their potential for driving the next generation of care is indisputable [3,4]. But, as with other historical transformations, the solutions and associated shifts risk leaving certain groups or individuals behind [5,6].…”
