“…This hypothesis is supported by the fact that preterm infants with apnoea also exhibit prolonged auditory evoked responses (15), an indirect marker of brainstem immaturity. Moreover, our extremely preterm infants exhibited developmental changes in apnoea/hypopnoea characteristics that mirror maturation of hypoxic responsiveness; specifically, hypoxic ventilatory depression is manifested by a greater reduction in RR than V t during early postnatal life (16) followed by an improved ability to sustain RR during hypoxia with advancing age.
