The Biocontrol Potential of Endophytic Trichoderma Fungi Isolated from Hungarian Grapevines. Part I. Isolation, Identification and In Vitro Studies

Abstract: This paper reports on the identification and in vitro characterization of several Trichoderma strains isolated from the Tokaj Wine Region in North-East Hungary. Ten isolates were analyzed and found to consist of six individual species—T. gamsii, T. orientale, T. simmonsii, T. afroharzianum, T. atrobrunneum and T. harzianum sensu stricto. The growth potential of the strains was assessed at a range of temperatures. We also report here on the in vitro biocontrol properties and fungicide tolerance of the most prom… Show more

“…Introduction of new biocontrol strains in the form of Trichoderma has several benefits to act as a biostimulant and plant growth promoters. However, weather variability also needs to be considered in long run for the management of emerging pathogens recently (Kovács et al, 2021 ). New biocontrol agents should have potential effectiveness to inhibit the pathogen under varying weather and climatic conditions (Modrzewska et al, 2022 ).…”

“…According to Rush et al [64], Trichoderma species represent 50-60% of the fungal BCAs. Currently, at least 77 commercial Trichoderma-based biofungicides are available on the global market, including 7 approved by the European Commission for use in the Member States of the European Union (Supplementary Table S1) [18,[64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72]. The above commercial preparations contain at least 36 different strains belonging to 13 species of the Trichoderma: T. asperellum (9), T. afroharzianum (formerly T. harzianum, 1), T. atroviride (8), T. atrobrunneum (1), T. asperelloides (1), T. fertile (1), T. gamsii (1), T. harzianum (7), T. hamatum (1), T. polysporum (1), T. stromaticum (1), T. virens (1), and T. viride (3), applied separately or in a consortium (Supplementary Table S1).…”

“…Endophytic Trichoderma strains were isolated from white grapevine plants (Furmint cultivar) from the Tokaj Wine Region, Northeast Hungary ( Figure 1 ). The isolation and characterization of the T. afroharzianum (TR04), T. simmonsii (TR05) , T. orientale (TR06), and T. gamsii (TR08) strains that were used in this study were previously described by Kovács et al [ 37 ].…”

“…The method previously described in Kovács at al. [ 37 ] was followed for the isolation of fungi from the inner, woody part of the plants, as well as from different parts of the grapevine plants ( Figure 2 ).…”
