The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter OsABCG3 is essential for pollen development in rice

Abstract: BackgroundThe pollen wall, which protects male gametophyte against various stresses and facilitates pollination, is essential for successful reproduction in flowering plants. The pollen wall consists of gametophyte-derived intine and sporophyte-derived exine. From outside to inside of exine are tectum, bacula, nexine I and nexine II layers. How these structural layers are formed has been under extensive studies, but the molecular mechanisms remain obscure.ResultsHere we identified two osabcg3 allelic mutants a… Show more

“…OsABCC1 is one of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC transporter proteins play roles in the translocation of a broad range of substances within membranes using energy from ATP hydrolysis [70]. Song et al [66] stated that OsABCC1 plays a vital role in the detoxification and decreasing As in rice grains.…”

“…Defective pollen wall ( DPW ) acts as a fatty acyl-carrier protein reductase and DPW2 as a fatty-acid acyltransferase to alter the amounts of cutin and waxes, and of lipidic and phenolic compounds, respectively, during anther development and pollen formation [40,41]. The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters ABCG15 / PDA1 , ABCG26 , and ABCG3 work collaboratively but perform their own functions to transport different materials for anther development and pollen formation [42,43,44,45]. The lipid transfer protein OsC6 is secreted into anther cuticle, anther locule, and the space between the tapetum and middle layer for pollen exine and orbicule formation downstream of TDR and GAMYB [46].…”

“…In rice, lipid and phenolic metabolism are indispensable for sporopollenin synthesis and pollen wall formation. Genes associated with lipid metabolism include Glycerol-3-Phosphate Acyltransferase3 (GPAT3; Men et al, 2017), CYP704B2 , CYP703A3 (Yang et al, 2014), Defective Pollen Wall (DPW; Shi et al, 2011), Acyl-CoA Synthetase12 (ACOS12; Yang et al, 2017), Oryza sativa ATP Binding Cassette G26 (OsABCG26; Zhao et al, 2015), OsABCG15 (Qin et al, 2013), OsABCG3 (Chang et al, 2018), and OsC6 (Zhang et al, 2010). Loss of function of these genes often leads to defective pollen wall formation, indicating the important role of lipid metabolism on pollen wall formation.…”
