Abstract: Objectives Psychological well-being (PWB) may be a potential modifiable risk factor of age-related diseases. We aimed to determine associations of PWB with sensorineural and cognitive function and neuronal health in middle-aged adults. Methods This study included 2039 Beaver Dam Offspring Study participants. We assessed PWB, hearing, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity impairment, olfactory impairment, cognition, and retinal (macular ganglion cell inner-plexiform layer, mGCIPL) thickness. Age-sex-education-adj… Show more

“…These methodological differences may account for the observed discrepancies in results. Hence, albeit speculative at this stage, this more future-oriented and motivational construct can exert a relevant role in promoting cognitive resilience in the presence of brain pathology and less impact, or no detectable relevance on cognitive outcomes, when considering normally performing individuals (however, see Merten et al, 2021 , to explore the relationship between psychological wellbeing composite score, including PiL, and cognitive functioning and impairments).…”

“…Finally, sense of purpose is associated with using preventative healthcare services [14], and thus may be associated with greater adherence to public health messaging around protecting one's hearing. As far as we are aware, there has been 1 case study that found a theme of recovery for purpose in life among a patient with hearing loss [15] and 1 cross-sectional study that found that a psychological well-being measure that was a composite of positive relations with others and purpose in life was associated with better hearing [16]. Otherwise, we are unaware of any studies that have examined the association between purpose in life and hearing.…”

“…A growing body of research is refining our understanding of the directionality between PWB and cognitive aging trajectories, moving beyond conceptualizations of cognitive impairment as a cause of diminished PWB (e.g., Wilson et al, 2013;Cho et al, 2015), to an examination of PWB as a putative protective factor (Merten et al, 2021;Bell et al, 2022). Higher levels of well-being plausibly attenuate the risk for accelerated cognitive decline or incident dementia via physiological and behavioral pathways, including the reduction of neuroinflammation and cardiovascular dysfunction (Allerhand et al, 2014) and the enabling of more effective emotional coping or management of medical comorbidities associated with dementia risk.…”

“…While there is evidence that individual facets of well-being variably associate with specific cognitive domains (Zahodne et al, 2014;Bell et al, 2022), many previous studies are limited by testing associations with a composite measure of PWB (e.g., Merten et al, 2021), or using clinical diagnosis or a single cognitive domain as an outcome (e.g., Gerstorf et al, 2007). This broad approach potentially conflates distinct facets and mechanisms.…”
