Abstract: Dietary GL but not GI is inversely associated with fat distribution measures such as WC, BMI, and ABSI in the study population. This result may suggest a beneficial role of higher-GL diets in the prevention of obesity.

“…In contrast, in another study, higher dietary total carbohydrate and GL were related to a diminished probability of being obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), while GI did not relate to obesity (43). In agreement with our ndings, a cross-sectional study from Iranian population identi ed no signi cant relationship between dietary GI and abdominal as well as general obesity; however, an inverse link was reported between GL and BMI and WC (44). Another cross-sectional study on 979 adults, in line with our study, reported no association between GI and GL with either WC or BMI (17).…”

“…Rs17782313 is shown to be signi cantly related to visceral fat accumulation, WC, and BMI so that each additional C allele of rs17782313 displayed an elevated weight by 2.45 kg (49). Iranians consume a large amount of carbohydrate in their usual diets (44), which in case of being the carrier of MC4R rs17782313 risk allele, may be at higher risk for general and central obesity. Dietary carbohydrate is the most potent inducer of insulin release, which substantially stimulates the synthesis, uptake and storage of fat in adipose tissue (41); this underlies the hypothesis that high-carbohydrate diets induce accumulation of excess adiposity and obesity.…”

“…The results from cross-sectional studies on either Glycaemic Index (GI), glycaemic load (GL), or both have found null,7 positive8 9 or inverse10 relationships with obesity. These studies have controlled for confounding variables such as age, sex, region, education, total energy intake, smoking status, marital status, physical activity, breakfast skipping and home ownership.…”

“…According to the World Health Organization statistics, over 600 million adults are obese. 1 Obesity has been associated with increased mortality and morbidity attributable to the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). 2,3 Studies have shown that obesity prevalence morbidity and mortality rates have increased significantly worldwide.…”

“…2,3 Studies have shown that obesity prevalence morbidity and mortality rates have increased significantly worldwide. 4 The trends of obesity have made some researchers predict countries such as Iran 1 and China 5 to record a marked increase in total adult mortality rates over the next several decades. The prevalence of MetS, which has resulted in the global burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), has increased at a considerable rate during the last two decades.…”
