The applicability of a color acetate film for estimating photosynthetic photon flux density in a forest understory

Abstract: The suitability of a color acetate film for estimating photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) in a forest understory was examined. The fading ratio of the film (F), the total PPFD (PPFD total ) to which the film was exposed, and the average daily maximum temperature during exposure (T) were obtained from measurements at multiple sampling points throughout an entire year within a natural secondary forest (n ϭ 42). The ranges of the recorded values were as follows: F 35%-99%, PPFD total 1.4-28.3 mol m Ϫ2 , an… Show more

“…The PPFD of all odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13) and all even (2, 4, 6, 8 10 and 12) number leaves were measured in wide rows (WR; right side) and narrow rows (NR; left side), respectively under 2M2S, 1M1S and M. In addition, PPFD at the top of soybean canopy was also determined at second trifoliate stage (V 2 ), fifth trifoliate stage (V 5 ) and flower initiation (R 1 ) stages corresponding to TS, GFS and MS stages of maize, respectively ( Fig 2 ). The measurements were performed following a previously described method [28]. A color acetate film (O-1D, Taisei Chemical Industries, Tokyo, Japan) and Aquation Scientific Equipment (opto leaf, D-Meter RYO-470, Taisei Chemical Industries, Tokyo, Japan) were used to record and read the data.…”

“…Solar radiation interception of plants was measured on all fully expanded leaves using OptoLeaf (Long-term measurement type, Japan) for a week (Kawamura et al, 2005). Net photosynthetic rate (Pn) was measured on the youngest fully expanded leaf using a Li6400 photosynthesis system (Li-COR, Lincoln, NE, United States).…”

“…Kawamura et al () clarified that the fading rate is strongly correlated with the integrated photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD, mol/m 2 ) in the forest understory environment. Hence, to obtain an analytical curve of the fading rate vs. integrated PPFD (mol/m 2 ) for the site, we set up a quantum sensor (LI‐190SA; LI‐COR, Lincolon, Nebraska, USA) in a gap adjacent to the study plot, and PPFD was recorded every 30 min using a data logger (LI‐1400; LI‐COR).…”
