A randomized clinical trial enrolling healthy volunteers was carried out to evaluate the effects of S. muticum supplementation. An experiment was conducted to investigate whether intake of S. muticum could exert beneficial effects on human health. Volunteers were asked to consume dried encapsulated S. muticum 4.8 grams daily for 4 weeks. Analysis was made on several parameters including blood lipid profile, stress hormone level, fatigue status, liver functions, and lymphocyte subpopulation level, before and after consumption of the S. muticum capsuls. Fifty-one subjects were able to complete this study. Oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) decreased 14% from the baseline level of 6.0±1.4 μg/mL to 5.1±1.6 μg/mL, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). There was a correlation between decreased ox-LDL levels and increased total antioxidant status (TAS) levels after S. muticum intake. There was a remarkable increase in natural killer (NK) lymphocyte count, but changes in the mean absolute lymphocyte subsets were unremarkable. Healthy subjects showed significant improvement of biomarkers of fatigue and liver functions, such lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). These results suggest that S. muticum may have potential beneficial effects as a healthy food supplement through its antioxidant, hepatoprotective and immunologic functions.

Abstract. Carnosine is a natural dipeptide that has shown multiple benefits in the treatment of various diseases. This study investigated the ameliorative effects of carnosine on glucose metabolism in restraint-stressed mice. Our results showed that restraint stress could significantly influence glucose metabolism, as reflected by lowered glucose tolerance, hepatic and muscle glycogen content, and increased plasma corticosterone concentration in mice. Oral administration of carnosine (150 and 300 mg/kg) not only reverted stress-induced decline in glucose tolerance and glycogen content in liver and muscle, but also reduced plasma corticosterone level. Carnosine has also significantly suppressed mRNA expression of glucose-6-phosphatase, while elevating glycogen synthase 2, glucokinase and glucose transporter 2 expressions in the liver. The obtained results demonstrated the harmful effects induced by restraint stress, while proving that carnosine could ameliorate stress-induced glucose metabolism disturbance. It is presumable that carnosine exerts its anti-stress effects by indirectly affecting the histaminergic neuron system, modulating the stress-activated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and improving glucose metabolism through regulation of the enzymes in the glucose metabolic pathways.

Background: Edaravone (Eda) is a free-radical scavenger which is used in treating stroke, cerebral hemorrhage and some other diseases in clinic. However, it's antioxygenation during development is still unknown.Method: An oxidative damage model was established in chick embryo by using a generator of free radicals, 2,2'-azobis[2-methylpropionamidine] dihydrochloride (AAPH). The mortality rate and embryo's weight were measured to detect whether retarded growth happened. In order to observe the blood vessels, the yolk-sac blood vessels and CAM blood vessels density were observed. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymatic activity were detected to evaluate the oxidative damage in the chick embryo.Result: In this model, embryo development and angiogenesis were heavily affected by AAPH. However, Eda alleviated the growth retardation and anti-angiogenesis induced by AAPH. After AAPH treatment, the MDA content increased and SOD enzymatic activity declined which was also mitigated by Eda. Conclusion:Overall, our research revealed that Eda mitigated embryonic anti-angiogenesis induced by oxidative damage after AAPH treatment, which may be helpful for future clinical studies.stress [7].
