Abstract: We showed that S. obtusifolium presents a potent anti-inflammatory activity, due to the presence of the N-methyl-(2S,4R)-trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline(NMP) in the plant extract. This action is related to the inhibition by NMP of TNF-alpha and inflammatory enzymes.

“…The occurrence of compound I was confirmed by the MS analysis, in full agreement with the literature [17,18,35]. The compound has been previously reported in Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Sapoteaceae), a medicinal species from Northeast Brazil with anti-inflammatory [36] and wound healing properties [37]. The authors reported that the compound at doses ranging from 25-100 mg/kg decreased licking time and paw edema in the formalin test, as well as a complete reversion of the increased number of polymorphonuclear cells in the inflammation point.…”

“…The authors reported that the compound at doses ranging from 25-100 mg/kg decreased licking time and paw edema in the formalin test, as well as a complete reversion of the increased number of polymorphonuclear cells in the inflammation point. Additionally, the compound decreased the expression of iNOS, TNF-α, COX-2, and NF-κβ [36]. Compounds II and III presented [M + H] + ions at m/z 99.6 and 81.5 amu, respectively.…”

“…The methanol fraction from S. obtusifolium leaves (MFSOL) was obtained according to the procedure previously described, to obtain a yellowish amorphous powder (Aquino et al, 2017). The MFSOL was dissolved in sterile water and treated to cell cultures at final concentrations of 6.25 -100 μg/ml.…”

“…Two studies with the hydroalcoholic fractions obtained from leaves of S. obtusifolium showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans (Pereira et al, 2016;Sampaio et al, 2017). Other study demonstrated antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of L-proline, N-methyl-(2S, 4R)-trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline (NMP), presents in major proportion in the methanol fraction of leaves of S. obtusifolium (MFSOL) (Aquino et al, 2017). Also, NMP showed wound healing activity on excisional wounds, which was related to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions (Aquino et al, 2019).…”

“…5 Sideroxylon obtusifolium conhecida como "quixabeira", é utilizada na medicina popular nordestina no Brasil. 6 Sua biodiversidade exuberante e ainda pouco estudada está ameaçada de extinção, principalmente, por ação humana, na extração desenfreada de sua casca. Uma vez que, ela é popularmente empregada como agente antioxidante, hipoglicêmico e antimicrobiano.…”
