The amygdala complex: multiple roles in associative learning and attention.

Abstract: Although certain neurophysiological functions of the amygdala complex in learning seem well established, the purpose of this review is to propose that an additional conceptualization of amygdala function is now needed. The research we review provides evidence that a subsystem within the amygdala provides a coordinated regulation of attentional processes. “…Studies in primates correlated the loss of social and affective behaviors with the removal of the amygdala (Aggleton 1993), whereas, studies in humans have described an impairment of social behaviors and in processing information having emotional significance after damage of the amygdala or the prefrontal cortex (Adolphs et al 1995;Damasio et al 1990;Damasio et al 1994;Scott et al 1997). The central amygdaloid nucleus is the output nucleus of the amygdala (Pitkänen et al 1997) but also elaborates components of the integrated emotional behavior distinct from those elaborated in the basolateral nuclei (Gallager and Holland 1994;Killcross et al 1997). Therefore, a prominent activation of FLI by clozapine, but not haloperidol, in the central extended amygdala, as reported by this study, might help to understand why clozapine is effective on such symptoms as blunted affect, social withdrawal and, in general, on the so-called negative symptoms of schizophrenia.…”
