Abstract: Purpose: Patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) with meperidine provides effective analgesia following thoracotomy. Accumulation of normeperidine, a meperidine metabolite with neuroexcitatory effects, has led to recommendations to limit the use of meperidine postoperatively.
