The literature regarding formal coach education and development highlights issues of transference of usable knowledge to the real-world context. This study sought to engage coaches from a Spanish football academy in a longitudinal work-based coach development program (CDP) focused on the delivery of post-match feedback. The CDP was delivered over a 23-month period through collaboration between a sport pedagogue researcher-practitioner, the Academy Management Team, and an experienced research team. The study adopted a case study design, utilizing a multiple method data collection strategy that occurred in several stages: 1) Systematic observations (Sep–Dec 2018) and 2) debrief (Jan 2019), where baseline coach behaviors and underpinning knowledge were recorded; 3) a workshop and a directed task (Mar 2019), encouraging coaches to apply new knowledge; 4) a directed task 2 and reflective interview (Apr/May 2019), facilitating coaches’ reflection on their past deliveries and rationalization and planning of their forthcoming sessions’ delivery and 5) a consolidation interview (Apr 2020), capturing knowledge stabilization. Qualitative data suggest that there was an increased understanding in the adoption of behaviors including corrective feedback, silence, questioning, and player participation throughout the CDP. In addition, coaches’ self-reflection found acceptance of their coaching delivery or a disconnect between their desired and actual behaviors during the delivery of video-based feedback. This study provides a preliminary framework for further implementation and exploration in developing coaches’ knowledge and understanding of delivering post-match video-based feedback.

This study identifies the topical areas of research that have attempted a psychological approach to soccer research over the last 33 years (1990–2022) and explored the growth and stagnation of the topic as well as research contributions to soccer development. Data were obtained from 1863 papers from the Web of Science database. The data were collected through keyword text mining and data preprocessing to determine the keywords needed for analysis. Based on the keywords, latent Dirichlet allocation-based topic modeling analysis was performed to analyze the topic distribution of papers and explore research trends by topic area. The topic modeling process included four topic area and fifty topics. The “Coaching Essentials in Football” topic area had the highest frequency, but it was not statistically identified as a trend. However, coaching, including training, is expected to continue to be an important research topic, as it is a key requirement for success in the highly competitive elite football world. Interest in the research field of “Psychological Skills for Performance Development” has waned in recent years. This may be due to the predominance of other subject areas rather than a lack of interest. Various high-tech interventions and problem-solving attempts are being made in this field, providing opportunities for qualitative and quantitative expansion. “Motivation, cognition, and emotion” is a largely underrated subject area in soccer psychology. This could be because survey-based psychological evaluation attempts have decreased as the importance of rapid field application has been emphasized in recent soccer-related studies. However, measuring psychological factors contributes to the study of football psychology through a new methodology and theoretical background. Recognizing the important role of psychological factors in player performance and mental management, as well as presenting new research directions and approaches that can be directly applied to the field, will advance soccer psychology research.

This systematic review aims to provide in-depth information regarding effective verbal communication in physical education learning and sports coaching to improve achievement and health. The literature review was conducted identifying, evaluating, and interpreting relevant research results. To collect data, an online search was performed using Scispace software, focusing on journals indexed by the Scopus database, DOAJ, and published between 2019 - 2024. The journals were selected based on inclusion criteria: international and national journals indexed by Scopus, DOAJ, and Sinta. The keywords used were; "Effective Verbal Communication", "Physical Education Learning", and "Sports Coaching". The search generated 95 articles. Other 7 registered articles were also obtained from other sources using the inclusion criteria determined beforehand. These articles then went through a screening process, and 10 articles were selected as they matched the theme and the inclusion requirements. For standard operationalization, this research follows the PRISMA method. The research six main results. First, (1) Good verbal instructions from trainers or teachers were proven to improve the quality of students' understanding, motivation, and level of physical activity. They had a positive impact on achievement and fitness or physical health. Besides personal benefits, effective verbal communication was known to improve interpersonal relations, cooperation, coordination, and team performance among students and athletes. This study also found that encouragement of verbal communication helps adolescent students understand sports rules and techniques, improve physiological reactions and skills, and improve physical fitness and performance. Fourth, verbal communication in Indonesian facilitated active participation, teacher-student interaction, increased understanding and safety of athletes, and preserved positive cultural values in sports. Next, it was found that good use of Indonesian in sports training encouraged proper understanding and improved performance and safety in sports activities. Finally, this study noted several obstacles faced by physical education teachers. However, these challenges can be overcome by incorporating communication strategies that use modern technology to encourage student activity and the effectiveness of physical education learning.
