The 16S rRNA gene in the study of marine microbial communities

Abstract: ABSTRACT. New sequencing technologies and analytical capabilities have stimulated the study of microbial communities from specific environments, enabling researchers to understand the complexity of those systems. The 16S rRNA gene has proved very useful in describing the diversity and characterization of marine microbial communities, particularly of uncultivated organisms. The development of new sequencing techniques has contributed to the exponential increase in the number of reported 16S rRNA sequences as ba… Show more

“…Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) bacterial extraction was done from pure culture media by the Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) [18] method. In addition, sequencing (Macrogen laboratory in the U.S) of specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products for the gen 16S ribosomal region of bacteria was done [19]. Sequencing analysis was done using bioinformatic software Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (MEGA) X.…”

“…La identidad se determinó a partir de la secuenciación parcial del gen 16S ARNr con los primers 63f (5'-CAGGCCTAACACATGCAAGTC-3') y 1387r (5'-GGGCGGWGTGTACAAGGC-3'). Las lecturas se analizaron con el algoritmo BLASTn, y para la asignación de especie se tuvo en cuenta un mínimo de 98,65 % de similitud (Valenzuela-González et al, 2015). ).…”

“…Identity was determined from partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene with primers 63f (5'-CAGGCCTAACACATGCAAGTC -3 ') and 1387r (5'-GGGCGGWGTGTACAAGGC -3 '). The readings were analyzed with the BLASTn algorithm, and a minimum of 98.65 % similarity was taken into account for the species assignment (Valenzuela-González et al, 2015).…”

“…Nucleic acid amplification method is a classic tool to identify marine bacteria based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. For instance, the 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence has proved to be powerful in studying the diversity and identifying marine microbial communities, especially for non‐culturable microorganisms [9]. However, it is a destructive method, and it needs time‐consuming cell process.…”
