Teratoma tongue: Case report and review of literature

Abstract: Teratomas are true neoplasms composed of tissues from all three germinal layers and may exhibit variable levels of maturity. They have an unknown origin and eccentric microscopic appearance. Teratomas arising from the oral cavity are rare in the newborn; only 22 cases have been reported in the literature. We describe a female neonate with an oral teratoma originating from the tongue that was successfully treated with surgery.

“…Given that newborns are necessary nasal breathers, oral obstruction would gradually impact the feeding process rather than causing acute airway compromise. Concomitant anomalies could be associated with oral teratomas, like cystic hygroma, cleft lip/palate, and other multifocal teratomas [3].…”

“…If large enough, they may cause airway obstruction, respiratory distress, dysphagia, difficult in eating and pain due mostly to infection in the lesion. In malignant teratoma radio-chemotherapy is used after surgical removal of the tumour(5). Alphafetoprotein( AFP) has been shown to be reliable indicator of disease activity and some authors advocate investigating teratoma recurrence by doing serial serum AFP levels.…”
