The structure of freshwater phytoplankton communities can be strongly influenced by environmental and spatial processes at different scales. To identify the main forces that drive phytoplankton structure becomes a relevant tool to understand several knowledge gaps in the phytoplankton ecology domain, such as community succession, biological invasions and responses to disturbances. We used the morphological-based functional groups (MBFG) approach to investigate the influence of environmental conditions (physical and chemical factors), nutrient availability and spatial processes (habitat connection and species dispersal) in structuring microphytoplankton community in a subtropical hypereutrophic reservoir located in southern Brazil. Samples were taken quarterly, between February 2017 and December 2018. We used distance-based multivariate analysis of variance (PERMA-NOVA) to evaluate potential spatial and seasonal dissimilarities in the MBFG's biovolume, and variation partitioning approach (pRDA) to evaluate the role of environmental, nutrient availability and spatial components in explain the microphytoplankton community structure. We identified 16 microphytoplankton taxa, which were sorted into five MBFGs. Significant seasonal dissimilarities were observed in the MBFG's biovolume. Higher relative biovolume of potential harmful cyanobacteria (MBFG III) and alien dinoflagellates (MBFG V) was observed in summer and autumn/winter, respectively. Pure environmental component (composed by physical and chemical predictors insolation, precipitation, total dissolved solids, turbidity, water temperature, water transparency and wind intensity) explained 45% of the variance in the MBFG's biovolume, whereas pure nutrient availability component explained 7% and spatial component explained only 3% of the biotic variance. The results showed that the environmental factorsespecially the seasonal-influenced onesare more effective than nutrient availability and spatial processes in explaining the microphytoplankton community structure in this ecosystem. Our findings alert to the need to consider the variability of the environmental conditions (mainly those directly influenced by seasonality) in phytoplankton community structure in disturbed freshwater ecosystems prone to eutrophication events.

Due to the inputs of allochthonous pollutants and biological species from imported water, ecological effects of water diversion on urban drinking sources require long-term monitoring. Since spatial distributions of biological and environmental elements are always susceptible to water diversion, the monitoring specifications in water-receiving regions are always different from conventional ecological monitoring, especially in monitoring parameter selection and site distribution. To construct the method for selecting sensitive monitoring parameters and optimizing sites distribution in lakes, the large river-to-lake water diversion project, Water Diversion from Yangtze River to Lake Taihu in China, was taken as an example. The physicochemical properties and phytoplankton communities in the water-receiving Gonghu Bay and the referenced lake center were investigated and compared between the water diversion and non-diversion days in different seasons from 2013 to 2014. The comparative and collinearity analyses for selecting sensitive physicochemical parameters to water diversion, and the multidimensional scaling analysis based on the matrices of biological and sensitive physicochemical data, were integrated to optimize the monitoring in the water-receiving lake regions. Seven physicochemical parameters, including water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll a, and active silicate, were demonstrated to be sensitive to seasonal water diversion activities and selected for optimizing the site distribution and daily water quality monitoring. The nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis results based on the data matrices of sensitive physicochemical parameters and phytoplankton communities were consistent for sites distribution optimization. For cost-effective monitoring, the sites distribution scheme could choose the optimizing results based on the Euclidean distance from 3.0 to 4.0 and the Bray-Curtis similarity from 40 to 60%. This scheme divided the Gonghu Bay into three water regions: the inflow river inlet, bay center, and bay mouth adjacent to the open water region. In each of the three regions, one representative site could be selected. If focusing on more details of each region, the standards with the Euclidean distance lower than 2.0 and the Bray-Curtis similarity higher than 60% should be considered. This optimization method provided an available way to fulfill the cost-effective long-term monitoring of urban drinking water sources influenced by water diversion projects.

In this study, the zooplankton community and its relationship with environmental factors were investigated in the Karakaya Dam Lake (KDL). The physico-chemical characterization showed that there were obvious changes in the water quality and zooplankton population structure, which was mainly due to the organic matter source. Reactive phosphate (SRP) and nitrogen values were found in low concentrations. A total of 22 zooplankton taxa were determined, including 14 taxa of Rotifera, followed by 6 taxa of Cladocera and 2 taxa of Copepoda. The most abundant species were Synchaeta oblonga (Rotifera), Bosminia longirostris (Cladocera), and Cyclops scutifer (Copepoda). The abundance of zooplankton was highest in spring. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to examine relationships between measured environmental variables and zooplankton composition. According to CCA, dissolved oxygen, and SRP values, there was a significant relation to zooplankton abundant with these factors. The triplots diagram demonstrated variations of the structure of zooplankton population composition which can be explained by the environmental variables. Oxidative stress (catalase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase) and neurotoxicity (acetyl cholinesterase) biomarkers were analyzed in copepod species. Glutathione reductase and acetyl cholinesterase activities were significantly inhibited in the summer. Catalase activity was induced in the spring. The seasonal changes of biomarker indicated that the KDL may be at risk of pollution that originated from agricultural and industrial activities.
