In the present work, we have successfully prepared and characterized novel nanocomposite material exhibiting temperature-dependent surface wettability changes, based on grafted brush coatings of non-fouling poly(di(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate) (POEGMA) with the embedded CaCO3 nanoparticles. Grafted polymer brushes attached to the glass surface were prepared in a three-step process using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Subsequently, uniform CaCO3 nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in POEGMA-grafted brush coatings were synthesized using biomineralized precipitation from solutions of CaCl2 and Na2CO3. An impact of the low concentration of the embedded CaCO3 NPs on cell adhesion and growth depends strongly on the type of studied cell line: keratinocytes (HaCaT), melanoma (WM35) and osteoblastic (MC3T3-e1). Based on the temperature-responsive properties of grafted brush coatings and CaCO3 NPs acting as biologically active substrate, we hope that our research will lead to a new platform for tissue engineering with modified growth of the cells due to the release of biologically active substances from CaCO3 NPs and the ability to detach the cells in a controlled manner using temperature-induced changes of the brush.

Featured Application: The review is focused on the stabilization of nanotubular materials in solvent media. This aspect is a key starting point for any application of nanotube-based formulations for pharmaceutical and industrial applications.Abstract: Inorganic nanotubes are attracting the interest of many scientists and researchers, due to their excellent application potential in different fields. Among them, halloysite and imogolite, two naturally-occurring aluminosilicate mineral clays, as well as boron nitride nanotubes have gained attention for their proper shapes and features. Above all, it is important to reach highly stable dispersion in water or organic media, in order to exploit the features of this kind of nanoparticles and to expand their applications. This review is focused on the structural and morphological features, performances, and ratios of inorganic nanotubes, considering the main strategies to prepare homogeneous colloidal suspensions in various solvent media as special focus and crucial point for their uses as nanomaterials.

In this work, we controlled the magnetic properties and water-solubility of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles by adjusting the reaction conditions during the preparation process. The growth condition-dependent crystalline, microstructure and therefore their magnetic properties were investigated in detail. It is found that the crystalline and the size of the nanoparticle become larger with the increasing of both the reaction temperature and reaction time. Consequently, the saturation magnetization (Ms) of our products was highly improved. Specifically, the typical sample prepared at 180 o C for 2 h, which has a higher Ms and good solubility in water was chosen as an alternative agent in magnetic resonance imaging The results show that it is an effective T 2 weighted MRI contrast agent.
