TEM-EELS study of low-friction superlattice TiAlN/VN coating: the wear mechanisms

Abstract: A 20-50 nm thick tribofilm was generated on the worn surface of a multilayer coating TiAlN/VN after dry sliding test against an alumina counterpart. The tribofilm was characterized by applying analytical transmission electron microscopy techniques with emphasis on detailed electron energy loss spectrometry and energy loss near edge structure analysis. Pronounced oxygen in the tribofilm indicated a predominant tribo-oxidation wear. Structural changes in the inner-shell ionization edges of N, Ti and V suggested … Show more

“…see Ref. [19]). For all of the tribofilm, the roll-like wear debris and the loose wear debris, N K, Ti L2,3, V L2,3 and O K-edges are all present, suggesting a form of (TiAlV)NxOy (Al is not included in a spectrum here as the Al K is at 1560 eV, but was present as determined by EDX).…”

“…In the associated wear mechanism studies, Raman spectroscopy of the wear debris detected V 2 O 5 -type structure [8]. Then more comprehensive analyses of the worn surfaces indicated the formation of an amorphous and multicomponent tribofilm on the worn surface as a result of a dynamic process of wear particle generation, powdering, tribo-oxidation, self agglomeration and adhesion to the parent worn surface [9][10][11].…”

“…The EELS analysis addresses several findings. In the first, the spectra exhibit almost identical N-K, Ti-L2,3 and V-L2,3 edges, in terms of energy positions and the edge shapes, as compared to the carbon-free TiAlN/VN coating [41]. In particular, the N-K edge follows the ionization threshold at 398.5 eV consists of two strong and narrow peaks at 403.5 and 412.0 eV and a low and broad peak at 431.0 -438.5 eV, which are typical features of stoichiometric nitrides.…”
