Telecardiology and its settings of application: An update

Abstract: Among the wide range of medical specialties in which telemedicine has been successfully applied, cardiology can be considered as one of the most important fields of application. Through the transmission of clinical data and the electrocardiogram, telecardiology allows access to a real-time assessment (teleconsultation) without any need to travel for both patient and cardiologist. This review discusses the impact of telecardiology in different clinical settings of application. Pre-hospital telecardiology has pr… Show more

“…Telemedicine support is currently widely implemented in clinical practice for the management of cardiovascular disease, both in acute and chronic conditions [3,4]. Hospital networks for the treatment of ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) are currently based on telemedicine support and remote telemedicine triage with pre-hospital electrocardiogram [5,6].…”

“…Telecardiology has proven to be useful in the clinical management of remote patients with real or suspected heart disease in different clinical settings. Over 20 years, several attempts have been made to try to introduce and expand telecardiology in the hospital setting, especially for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in remote locations [33]. Positive impacts of telecardiology have been demonstrated in the literature on patients with heart failure.…”

“…T here is a growing body of research into the value of telemedicine in cardiology. Telemonitoring projects for patients with heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or implantable cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators have provided promising levels of evidence for the future of telemedicine, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] and it is possible that the clinical interest of telemedicine could be demonstrated more clearly in sub-Saharan African countries than in Western countries because of the particular context of health problems. 1,[8][9][10] Clinical telemedicine in Ivory Coast has been a reality for a few years, with tele-expertise being used for electrocardiogram (EKG) reading and remote monitoring of EKG abnormalities in a cohort of Black Africans in the workplace.…”
