Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an evolving network architecture paradigm that focuses on the separation of control and data planes. SDN receives increasing attention both from academia and industry, across a multitude of application domains. In this article, we examine the current state of obtained knowledge on military SDN by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR). Through this work, we seek to evaluate the current state of the art in terms of research tracks, publications, methods, trends, and most active research areas. Accordingly, we utilize these findings for consolidating the areas of past and current research on the examined application domain, and propose directions for future research.

Abstract-Recent natural disasters have revealed that emergency networks presently cannot disseminate the necessary disaster information, making it difficult to deploy and coordinate relief operations. These disasters have reinforced the knowledge that telecommunication networks constitute a critical infrastructure of our society, and the urgency in establishing protection mechanisms against disaster-based disruptions.Hence, it is important to have emergency networks able to maintain sustainable communication in disaster areas. Moreover, the network architecture should be designed so that network connectivity is maintained among nodes outside of the impacted area, while ensuring that services for costumers not in the affected area suffer minimal impact.As a first step towards achieving disaster resilience, the RE-CODIS project was formed, and its Working Group 1 members conducted a comprehensive literature survey on "strategies for communication networks to protect against large-scale natural disasters," which is summarized in this article.Index Terms-vulnerability, end-to-end resilience, natural disasters, disaster-based disruptions.

A disaster may not necessarily demolish the telecommunications infrastructure, but instead it might affect the national grid and cause blackouts, consequently disrupting the network operation unless there is an alternative power source(s). In this paper, power outages are considered, and the telecommunication network performance is evaluated during a blackout. Two approaches are presented to minimize the impact of power outage and maximize the survival time of the blackout node. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to evaluate the network performance under a single node blackout scenario. The model is used to evaluate the network under the two proposed scenarios. The results show that the proposed approach succeeds in extending the network life time while minimizing the required amount of backup energy.INDEX TERMS -blackout, core network, disaster-resilient, IP/WDM, power outage.
