Technical Note: The air quality modeling system Polyphemus

Abstract: International audiencePolyphemus is an air quality modeling platform which aims at covering the scope and the abilities of modern air quality systems. It deals with applications from local scale to continental scale, using two Gaussian models and two Eulerian models. It manages passive tracers, radioactive decay, photochemistry and aerosol dynamics. The structure of the system includes four independent levels with data management, physical parameterizations, numerical solvers and high-level methods such as dat… Show more

“…In the usual configuration, SIREAM includes 5 bins logarithmically distributed over the size spectrum, that ranges from 0.01 µm to 10 µm. All these models are embedded in the POLYPHEMUS system, available at the web adress http://www.enpc.fr/cerea/polyphemus and which is described in Mallet et al (2007). The top height of the model is considered as sufficient as a simple calculation gives that 90% of the aerosol mass is under 3 km of altitude.…”

“…In this paper, we use a 3-D CTM (Polair3D, Boutahar et al, 2004) coupled with a size-resolved aerosol model (SIREAM, Debry et al, 2007) in the framework of the POLYPHEMUS system (Mallet et al, 2007). The system has been evaluated for aerosol outputs (PM 10 , PM 2.5 and chemical composition) and gas-phase species at the ground level for year 2001 over Europe and over Greater Paris .…”

“…These socalled plume-in-grid models consist in embedding a localscale model (usually a Gaussian plume or puff model) within an Eulerian 3-D model, in order to treat the plumes at subgrid scale, thus eliminating some of the aforementioned er8918 I. Korsakissok and V. Mallet: Plume-in-grid modeling over Paris employed here has been developed on the air quality modeling system Polyphemus (Mallet et al, 2007). The aim is to provide an easy-to-use, modular model, fit for applications from regional to continental scales, and both for reactive and non-reactive pollutants.…”
