Target blue nevus

Abstract: In two cases of target blue nevi of the foot, both lesions displayed a distinctive concentric pigmentary variation. This correlated histologically with a peripheral alteration of dermal collagen accompanied by a focal regression or differentiation of blue nevus cells. The resulting distinctive target blue nevus can be clinically differentiated from a malignant melanoma.

“…1 However, new entities of blue naevus have recently been described 2 which include the combined type, 3 deep penetrating type, 4 melanocytic dermal tumour of unpredictable outcome, 5 plaque type 6 , 7 and target type. 8 Common blue naevi are usually asymptomatic, blue or black, dome‐shaped papules, measuring less than 1 cm in diameter. Half of the common blue naevi occur on or near the dorsa of the hands and feet.…”

“…Many atypical morphological presentations of BN have also been described. Target‐like appearance defines a pigmented central portion surrounded by a skin‐coloured area and an outer ring‐like pigmentation . Plaque‐type BN presents as a blue–grey area, 1 cm or larger in size, which could either be composed of a single patch/plaque (Fig.…”
