Tailoring of Physical and Chemical Properties of Macro- and Microhydrogels Based on Telechelic PVA

Abstract: Poly(vinyl alcohol), PVA, is amenable to several structural modifications because of the presence of the hydroxyl moiety in the backbone. The chemical versatility of this polymer can be used for the obtainment of new wall-to-wall pH-responsive PVA chemical hydrogels and for the preparation of air-filled microspheres, for example, microbubbles. Here, we report on the characterization of the physical and chemical properties of these novel networks that can be potentially used in different biomedical applications… Show more

“…All the percentages are mass-to-volume ratio (1% = 1 g/100 mL), and solution means aqueous solution (The following is the same). PVA-COOH was synthesized as Gaio Paradossi et al described [20]. In a bath of 60°centigrade water, pH value of 100 mL 5% PVA solution was regulated to 4 by adding 2 mol/L HCl solution, then add 0.2 g NaIO 4 .…”

“…Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a well-known synthetic polymeric material. The biocompatibility of which justifies its inclusion in the class of biomacromolecules [10]. PVA is highly hydrophilic, non-toxic and biocompatible polymer with excellent film forming property.…”

“…A solution containing 40 % glycerol (99 % pure, molecular weight 92.09 g/mol; Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO) and 60 % de-ionized water was used as blood mimicking solution. A polymer shelled CA, previously described in literature [8], was included in this study. By diluting the master batch of the CA with the blood mimicking solution, a concentration of 10 5 MB/ml was achieved.…”

“…Thereafter the vessel was filled with a water solution including CA. Both the previously used polymeric CA and a modified version of it, with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles embedded in the shell, were included in this experiment [8]. Desired concentrations were achieved by diluting the master batch of the CA with de-ionized water to a concentration of 10 5 MB/ml for both MB types.…”
