Tailorable Polyanion Diffusion Coefficient in LbL Films: The Role of Polycation Molecular Weight and Polymer Conformation

Abstract: Assembly of oppositely charged macromolecules (proteins, DNA, polyelectrolytes) is often used for surface modification and functionalization. Yet, it remains a challenge to control the position and mobility of the molecules within the assembly. Using polyelectrolyte multilayers as model systems, we study the diffusion constant of the polyanion PSS. D PSS could be varied by 5 orders of magnitude. Two parameters were found to be important: (i) the conformation of the polyelectrolytes and (ii) the molecular weigh… Show more

“…Briefly, silica wafers were immersed in a mixture of 30% hydrogen peroxide, 32% ammonia solution and ultrapure water in a ratio of 1:1:5, and heated to 75 °C for 15 min. Then, the silicon wafers were washed several times with ultrapure water [ 77 , 78 ]. The lipid bilayer on silicon substrate was prepared by incubation of 0.5 mg/mL of liposome solution with substrate for 45 min, afterwards the remaining liposomes were removed by rinsing with buffer solution.…”

“…By virtue of their behavioral flexibility, PECs and PEMs have been studied for applications in a wide range of fields. From potential applications involving their use as separators in batteries 2 to protective coatings [3][4][5] to stimuli-responsive drug delivery and bio-compatible coatings 6,7 , PECs and PEMs are worth the amount of attention they've received over the past years.…”

“…We have studied the vertical diffusion of PSS within PDADMA/PSS multilayers extensively. For this purpose, we use neutron reflectivity to determine the average diffusion constant of PSS molecules. In brief, each PEM consists of a protonated and a deuterated slab.…”
