“…The level of raw impedance shows high variability between subjects and low overall impedance levels appear to be a characteristic feature of patients with GER disease (GERD) (8). Farre ´et al (9) have recently reported that exposure of the esophageal lumen to acid solutions, both in vitro and in vivo, causes a temporary drop in impedance level measured at times when no reflux or swallow was noted. This was attributed to an increased conductivity of the esophageal mucosa related to an increase in transcellular ionic transport caused by dilated intracellular spaces (DIS).…”

“…Baseline impedance measured by MII in the distal esophagus of normal subject is in the range of thousands of ohms, while in the distal esophagus of patients with severe esophagitis is in the range of only a few hundreds of ohms. We were the first to validate the use of baseline impedance for the evaluation of mucosal integrity . Interestingly, this MII technique allows, contrary with TMPD, to detect early changes of damage after perfusion of different solutions in rabbits and healthy volunteers and is able to detect differences in the mucosa of NERD patients.…”

On-going validations in healthy volunteers and patients further confirmed the utility of this measurements.…”
