Systematic review of the use of Statistical Process Control methods to measure the success of pressure ulcer prevention

Abstract: Successful prevention of pressure ulcers is the end product of a complex series of care processes including, but not limited to, the assessment of vulnerability to pressure damage; skin assessment and care; nutritional support; repositioning; and the use of beds, mattresses, and cushions to manage mechanical loads on the skin and soft tissues. The purpose of this review was to examine where and how Statistical Process Control (SPC) measures have been used to assess the success of quality improvement initiative… Show more

“…A stable process is that for which all measurements fall within the upper and lower control limits. As SPC charts plot measurements over a period of time, they can show whether a changing value is stable, as opposed to occurring due to chance 16. Descriptive data were also used to examine average weekly success rate pre- and postintervention, as well as to examine consult use and other measures.…”

“…Besides basic wound care and treatment, family members must also do well in daily care work, and the key points of PU care in different stages are slightly different [ 10 ]. Vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) refers to the sealing drainage of the skin or soft tissue defect with a polyethylene alcohol hydrate algal salt foam dressing containing a drainage tube, sealing it with a bio-permeable membrane to make it a sealed space, and finally connecting the drainage tube to the negative pressure source [ 11 , 12 ]. It is a brand-new treatment method to promote wound healing through controllable negative pressure [ 13 ].…”

“…The prevalence of pressure ulcers has largely remained unchanged over the past two decades, while the associated costs of care continue to increase. The traditional therapeutic strategy for pressure ulcers is prevention, and the common interferences aim to improve wound healing [ 1 , 2 ]. The wound healing process in chronic pressure ulcers is complicated, involving remodeling and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM), cell proliferation, inflammation, and angiogenesis [ 3 , 4 ].…”
