Abstract: The error rate of the partial response maximum‐likelihood (PRML) system for a partial response channel with a (1 + Dl)n(1 − Dm) type transfer function in digital magnetic recording was systematically investigated. In this paper, first, the method of systematically finding a PRML system with a large signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) at the discrimination point and a large improvement of the SNR by Viterbi decoding is discussed.
