Syringomatous Adenoma of the Nipple-Treatment by Central Mound Resection and Oncoplastic Reconstruction

Abstract: Syringomatous adenoma (SA) of the nipple is a rare tumor first described by Rosen in 1983. It is histologically similar to skin adnexal tumors in other parts of the body. It has been reported under several names including low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma, SA of the nipple, and infiltrating SA of the nipple. Clinical examination and mammographic evidence yield high suspicion for carcinoma and often these lesions are misdiagnosed. Because the lesion involves the nipple, surgical treatment has ranged from local … Show more

“…These tumors are usually amenable to local excision, and they can persist or recur if incompletely excised. Relative few cases have been reported in the world literature (about 30), and no reports exist, to our knowledge, of any of these lesions occurring in a supernumerary breast 10,14–23 …”

“…There have been no reports of SAN with distant metastasis, so mastectomy or axillary dissection is not routinely performed. For better cosmetic outcomes, tumor resection with nipple preservation should be considered [2,3,10].…”

“…In the literature, there have been 3 cases of SAN during pregnancy and lactation, one case during lactation period and 4 cases as soon as the lactation period finishes [8,[10][11][12]. These findings may suggest the possible relation of the tumor and maternal hormonal effects [10].…”
