Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of PBO/SWNT Composites&

Abstract: Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) has been synthesized in the presence of singlewall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in poly(phosphoric acid) (PPA) using typical PBO polymerization conditions. PBO and PBO/SWNT lyotropic liquid crystalline solutions in PPA have been spun into fibers using dry-jet wet spinning. The tensile strength of the PBO/SWNT fiber containing 10 wt % SWNTs is about 50% higher than that of the control PBO fibers containing no SWNTs. The structure and morphology of these fibers have been studi… Show more

“…Continuous fibers containing a few wt % of CNTs, obtained, for example, by incorporating the single-walled CNTs into PVA polymers [6, 7], have shown excellent fiber properties, but electrical and thermal conductivities were low because of limitations on the contents of CNTs. Despite the production of continuous fibers with up to 60 wt% CNT content [8], the development of the CNT-based continuous yarns/fibers having high industrial…”

“…Numerous composites fibers reinforced by SWCNTs, such as poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) [3], polyacrylonitrile [4,5], polyethylene [6], polypropylene [7] and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [8,9] have been reported for improvement of the mechanical properties. While the introduction of SWCNTs enhances the tensile strength of the matrix fiber, exfoliation and orientation of SWCNTs in polymer matrices remain a challenge for achieving high tensile strength in SWCNT-reinforced fibers.…”

“…Apart from mechanical reinforcement [2,3], one of the key interests is to develop conductive polymer composites [4][5][6] preferably at low concentration of CNT utilizing their high aspect ratio (L/D) for numerous applications, which include antistatic devices, capacitors and materials for EMI shielding. However, with few exceptions [7][8][9] uniform dispersion of CNT in polymer matrix is restricted due to aggregate formation irrespective of the techniques employed for composite preparation.…”
