A new series of transition metal complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) have been synthesized from the Schiff base (L) derived from 4-aminoantipyrine, salicylaldehyde and o-phenylenediamine. The structural features have been arrived from their elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, FAB-mass, IR, UV-Vis., 1 H NMR and ESR spectral studies. The data show that the complexes have composition of ML type. The UV-Vis., magnetic susceptibility and ESR spectral data of the complexes suggest a square-planar geometry around the central metal ion. The antimicrobial activities of the metal chelates against the bacteria Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and fungi Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Rhizoctonia bataicola have been carried out. A comparative study of MIC values of the Schiff base and its metal complexes indicates that the metal complexes exhibit higher antibacterial activity than the free ligand. The nuclease activity of the above metal complexes shows only the copper complex cleaves DNA.

Copper(II) Chloride binuclear complexes with variously substituted 2,6-diphenly piperidin-4-ones [Cu 2 LCl 4 (H 2 O) 3 ] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, thermal and spectral studies. Molar conductance data show that these complexes are non-electrolytes. The presence of three coordinated water molecules is confirmed by thermal and infrared spectral studies. IR spectral data indicate that the piperidin-4-ones are monodentate and coordinate only through ring nitrogen. The electronic spectral and magnetic studies suggest distorted square-pyramidal environment for Cu(II) complexes. Antibacterial activities of the ligands and their complexes have been tested against bacterial culture by disc diffusion method. It has been found that all the complexes have higher activity than the free ligands.

Microwave-assisted synthesis is a branch of green chemistry. The salient features of microwave approach are shorter reaction times, simple reaction conditions and enhancements in yields. Vanadium containing compounds have their utility in various physicochemicals, biochemical physiological, enzymatic and catalytic processes. Novel six binary/mixed ligand oxovanadium(IV).H 2 O (VI) have been synthesized by conventional as well as microwave methods. These compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, thermal data, FAB mass, FT-IR, molar conductance, electronic spectra, ESR and magnetic measurements. FAB mass and Thermal data show degradation pattern of the complexes. The thermal behavior of complexes shows that the hydrated complexes lose water molecules of hydration in the first step; followed by decomposition of ligand molecules in the subsequent steps. The reactivity and substitution behaviour of the synthesized complexes have also been studied.
