Synthesis of Hexagonally Packed Mesoporous TiO2 by a Modified Sol–Gel Method

Abstract: Stable to surfactant removal by calcination, Ti‐TMS1 is the first hexagonally packed, mesoporous transition metal oxide. The synthesis of this new material was achieved by a modified sol–gel technique from titanium alkoxides and phosphate surfactants. The large internal surface area, narrow and controllable pore size, thermal stability, and variable oxidation states of the metal give this new material great potential as a catalyst and sorbent.

“…Huang et al (2005) prepared mesoporous TiO 2 materials by the sol-gel process at room temperature using tetrabutyl titanate as the precursor in the absence of any templates. Antonelli and Ying (1995) synthesized mesoporous TiO 2 materials by a modified sol-gel method using phosphorus surfactants as templates. Pavasupree et al (2008) synthesized mesoporous anatase TiO 2 nanopowder by the hydrothermal method at 130ºC for 12h.…”

“…Since the first report of mesoporous titania, [14] prepared by the well-documented surfactant templating strategy, [11,12] there has been a great deal of effort devoted to the use of different titania precursors (e.g., alkoxides, halides, acetylacetonates, nanoclusters, colloids) in the synthesis and experiments designed to unravel the structure, property, and function relations of this material. [15,16] Little work has been devoted to understanding the mode of formation of mesoporous titania [17±19] and elucidating the differences with respect to nanocrystalline titania.…”

“…Templated synthesis, invented in early 1990s for the synthesis of mesoporous silica or aluininosilicate [8,9] were also applied for this purpose. Successes have been achieved as various approaches, such as starting with metal alkoxides and conducting the synthesis in non-aqueous systems, were employed to overcome serious difficulties in the synthesis [20][21][22]. In comparison, the synthesis proposed in this study has a prominent advantage that it can be conducted in aqueous system at moderate conditions.…”
