Synthesis of Functional Block Copolymers Carrying One Poly(p-phenylenevinylene) and One Nonconjugated Block in a Facile One-Pot Procedure

Abstract: Block copolymers composed of a MEH−PPV block and a nonconjugated functional block (molecular weights between 5 and 90 kg/mol) were synthesized in a facile one-pot procedure via ROMP. This one-pot procedure permits the synthesis of numerous block copolymers with little effort. Amphiphilic block copolymers were obtained via incorporation of oxanorbornene carrying a PEG side chain as well as via postpolymerization modification of a reactive ester carrying norbornene derivative with methoxypoly-(ethylene glycol)am… Show more

“…The ruthenium carbene initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of strained paracyclophanedienes and paracyclophanetrienes is an elegant strategy to prepare PPVs with good control of molecular weight, narrow dispersities, and minimal backbone defects. ROMP of the alkoxy- and alkyl-substituted paracyclophanedienes , and paracyclophanetrienes leads to PPVs that are more electron-rich than the parent unsubstituted polymer.…”

“…Another copolymer, P1b 50 - b - P2 15 , was prepared by one-shot ROMP using oxanorbornene (ONB) derivatives containing biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG, 1b ) , which showed good solubility in various solvents ( M n = 29.5 kDa, Đ = 1.22, Table , entry 4). This simple one-shot protocol to prepare BCPs containing easily functionalized PNB , and fluorescent and semiconducting PPV will further broaden the scope and preparation of functional polymer materials.…”

“…PPVs are well-known to engage in face-to-face π–π stacking,41 and are accessible through ROMP 4245. To connect the PPV strands, we polymerize norbornenes containing phenyl and perfluorophenyl46 pendant groups that participate in quadrupole interactions. The resultant tetrablock copolymer framework is soluble in common organics ( e.g.…”
