Water pollution by toxic substances, such as azo dyes, is a serious environmental problem that needs to be addressed. This study presents the synthesis and characterization of new polymeric sorbents, based on the epoxy resin Epidian® 5 (Ep5), as a potential adsorbent for the removal of the toxic azo dye C.I. Acid Violet 1 (AV1). Triethylenetetramine (TETA) was applied as a cross-linking agent in the amounts of 1 g (6.67 wt %), 1.5 g (10 wt %), and 2 g (13.33 wt %). The use of a compound with amino groups allows for the simultaneous functionalization of the obtained material. The reaction was carried out in an environment of ethylene glycol, with the addition of a porophore solvent (toluene) and bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate sodium salt (S). The attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) revealed the existence of a strong band in the 828–826 cm−1 range corresponding to the second-order amine group, which indicates their incorporation into the epoxy structure. The glass transition and decomposition temperatures of the resins decreased with the increasing amounts of amine in the material. The thermogravimetry (TGA) analysis demonstrated that all products are thermally stable up to 340 °C. The surface morphology and microstructural properties of the obtained sorbents were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and showed an irregular star shape, with dimensions ranging from 400 to 1000 µm. The adsorption capacities of Ep5-TETA1, Ep5-TETA1.5, Ep5-TETA2 and Ep5-TETA1.5 + S for AV1 evaluated during batch experiments were found to be 2.92, 3.76, 7.90 and 3.30 mg/g, respectively.

A series of poly(arylene ether nitrile) copolymers (PENAPs) were synthesized with bisphenol A (BP-A), bisphenol AP (BP-AP) and 2,6-Dichlorobenzonitrile (DCBN) via a nucleophilic substitution polycondensation reaction. FTIR and 1 H-NMR were used to confirm the structure of PENAPs. Glass transition temperature (T g) of PENAPs determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) ranged from 154.2 to 200.8 C. The 5% weight lost temperature (T 5%) of PENAPs were 418.9-447.7 C. The tensile and DMA test indicated that PENAPs possessed excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength more than 92.8 MPa and storage modulus more than 1.0 GPa at about 150 C. The melt flowability was measured by rheology properties testing ranging from 80 to 1639 GPa at 290 C and under shear frequency 100 Hz, which indicated the copolymers had good flowability and thermal stability. Additionally, PENAPs could be dissolved in many solutions, which meant PENAPs had good solubility and can be processed by solution method.

Epoxy resins are currently used in many areas of construction, such as resistant coatings, anchors, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, grouts, etc. This paper deals mainly with epoxy composites that can be applied during the rehabilitation of concrete constructions. The influence of a filler type on epoxy thermoset composites was monitored, whilst three different types of epoxy resin were used in order to achieve a better representation and confirmation of the results. During the testing of fillers, these were mainly secondary raw materials, including pre-treated hazardous waste (neutralisation sludge), representing various shapes and sizes of particle, while their amount in the epoxy matrix was chosen with regard to optimal viscosity and workability. Physical and mechanical parameters, like compressive and flexural strengths, cohesion with the concrete and thermal expansion of the epoxy composites containing various fillers were determined. The microstructure of epoxy composites with a different filler type and chemical resistance against chemical aggressive media were all monitored. The microstructure of epoxy composites was monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supported by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Computed tomography (CT) was also used for the evaluation of the cohesion of the epoxy composites with concrete and dispersion of the filler in the epoxy matrix.
