Synthesis of copper/cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocables via a simple hydrothermal route

Abstract: Cross-linking reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) can be initiated in the presence of copper ions, resulting in the formation of copper@cross-linked PVA nanocables by a one-step hydrothermal approach. In contrast to our previous findings in the case of silver ions, metal ions with high valency are more difficult to reduce during the cross-linking reactions under hydrothermal conditions. The variation of pH value during the reaction has significant effects on the quality of the product. Copper@cross-linked PV… Show more

“…The peaks at 831, 1 088, 1 319, 1 413, 2 904, 2 949, and 3 288 cm À1 are the characteristic PVA absorption bands. [36,37] However, there are no specific absorption peaks except the ones appeared at 1 413 and 1319 cm À1 , which are corresponding to the CÀC and ÀCH 2 stretch bands, respectively. [24] For the spectra, Figure 11(b) and (c) of 0.3 and 0.5 wt.-% NaCl, the ratios of relative height of these two peaks are almost the same as compared to that of the pristine PVA.…”

“…Hydrothermal reaction (Fig. 1a,b) was used to prepare PVA-coated copper nanowires templates [11][12][13][14][15]29 . The copper source was CuCl (0.1 g, 1 mmol) mixed with an aqueous PVA solution (6 wt.…”

“…It is well known that PVA chains will crosslink after treatment at elevated temperature (%250 8C) [30] and recently such PVA crosslinked Cu was prepared via hydrothermal treatment at 200 8C for 72 h. [31] However, in the present process, PVA crosslinking occurred at a relatively low temperature (100 8C) with SWNT, MWNT and C-60, under the influence of MW irradiation. It is worth mentioning that PVA crosslinking occurs within 5 min of MW irradiation but all the reactions were conducted for extended time to ensure complete crosslinking.…”
