Synthesis of carbon nanotubes from bulk polymer

Abstract: Carbon nanotubes have been synthesized by heat treating the polymer at 400 °C in air which was obtained by polyesterification between citric acid and ethylene glycol. Transmission electron micrographs and an electron diffraction pattern showed the formation of carbon nanotubes. The diameter of the tubes ranged from 5 to 20 nm, whereas the lengths were less than 1 μm.

“…Details of the experimental procedure are reported elsewhere. 20 CNTs were synthesized using polyester as a precursor obtained from the reaction between citric acid and ethylene glycol, according to the procedure described by Cho et al 21 Briefly, anhydrous citric acid was dissolved in ethylene glycol at a molar ratio of 1 : 4 and left to react with agitation at 508C for 2 h until the mixture became transparent. The mixture was then heated at 1508C for 48 h with continuous agitation allowing the removal of excess solvent.…”

“…The present work shows that MWNTs can be obtained by heating grass containing much tubular cellulose in the presence of a suitable amount of oxygen [16,17]. The treatments of removing protein and grease in the synthetic method of MWNTs from vascular bundles will be unnecessary if the absorbent cotton is used as the source of carbon.…”

“…[16] There have been numerous efforts on further advancing such synthesis route of low cost CNTs. Work have been done about types of plastics, conversion processes, growth conditions, catalysts, and quantities and qualities of versions, and the work examined processes based on the reactors types alone, such as autoclave, fix bed, moving bed, fluidized bed, etc.…”
