Synthesis of adhesion promoters for grafting polythiophene onto metal oxides

Abstract: A new class of compounds, !-(thiophen-3-yl) alkyl phosphonic acids, was used to link conductive polythiophene layers and several metal oxide substrates. In general, the adhesion between polythiophene lms and metal substrates is insuf cient for technical and microelectronic applications. The use of adhesion promoters between the substrate and the polymer enables the formation of a strongly bonded composite. Adhesive compounds were synthesized which contained a phosphonic acid group attached to the substrate and… Show more

“…With the intention to produce similarly well-controlled surfaces on metal oxide surfaces, silanes, , thiols, , and phosphoric and phosphonic acids , have been proposed as SAMs. However, silanes often show a high tendency to form multilayers through uncontrolled polymerization, and SAMs of thiol molecules are known to be less stable on materials other than gold and silver surfaces.…”

“…This methodology has numerous potential applications, including adhesion promotion [1,2], microcontact printing [3], chemical/biological sensing [4,5], corrosion resistance [6], and wetting [7]. In the field of SAMs, the Au/thiol system has been investigated extensively because Au is very stable in an atmosphere that will promote the adsorption of thiols onto the Au surface [8] and the adsorptive ability between the thiol group and gold is very strong and highly stable [9].…”
