In the present study, composite layer double hydroxide-metal oxide (Ni/Al-TiO2 and Ni/Al-ZnO) was successfully prepared and used as catalyst of oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene. Characterization of catalyst was used XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. The structure of Ni/Al-LDH, TiO2, and ZnO in composite Ni/Al-TiO2 and Ni/Al-ZnO was consistent, which also indicated that the preparation of composite did not change the form of precursors. FTIR spectra of Ni/Al-TiO2 and Ni/Al-ZnO absorption band at 3398, 1639, 1339, 832, 731, and 682 cm−1. The catalysts have an irregular structure, TiO2 and ZnO adhere to the surface of Ni/Al LDH. The percent mass of Ti and Zn on the composite at 29.3% and 18.2%, respectively. The acidity of Ni/Al LDH increased after being composited with TiO2 and ZnO. The optimum reaction time, dosage catalyst, and temperature were 30 min, 0.25 g, and 50°C, respectively, and n-hexane as a solvent. The percentage conversion of dibenzothiophene on Ni/Al-LDH, TiO2, ZnO, Ni/Al-TiO2, and Ni/Al-ZnO were 99.44%, 91.92%, 95.36%, 99.88%, and 99.90%, respectively. The catalysts are heterogeneous system and the advantage is that can be used for reusability. After 3 times catalytic reactions, the conversion of dibenzothiophene still retains more than 80%, even Ni/Al-TiO2 and Ni/Al-ZnO composites still 97.79% and 98.99%, respectively.

More molecules mean a stronger signal for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), as usually expected. However, this is not always true in many cases. The factual molecular concentration dependence of the SERS intensity has always been controversial and confusing. Here, we present a chemical interface damping (CID)-induced SERS signal attenuation mechanism to reveal it based on electromagnetic theory and experimentally demonstrate its validity. It has been revealed that the SERS intensity is the result of competition between the two opposite effects of molecular adsorption-induced Raman scattering centers and CID, but not necessarily increasing with the rising concentration, especially at a relatively high concentration. When the molecular adsorption-induced CID is strong enough, the SERS intensity shows a nonmonotonic concentration dependence, while the weak CID leads to the monotonic concentration dependence under optimal excitation. In addition, the excitation condition also significantly influences the concentration dependence of the SERS intensity. When an excitation wavelength significantly deviates from the local surface plasmon resonance of the SERS substrate, the SERS intensity will increase monotonously with the rising concentration, even in the case of the strong CID, despite the reduced overall signal intensity. This work not only deepens the understanding of the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism in SERS, which is also of significance in the quantitative analyses, but also is suitable for the other plasmon-enhanced molecular spectroscopies.

Mixed metal oxide (MMO) is one of the widely utilized ceramic materials in various industries. In order to obtain high performance, the specific surface area of MMO should be controlled. Calcination of layered double hydroxide (LDH) is a versatile way to prepare MMO with homogeneous metal distribution and well-developed porosity. Although researchers found that the specific surface area of LDH-originated MMO was relatively high, it had not been systematically investigated how the surface area is controlled under a certain parameter. In this review, we summarized LDH-originated MMO with various starting composition, calcination temperature, and pore developing agent in terms of specific surface area and porosity. Briefly, it was represented that MMOs with Mg-Al components generally had higher specific surface area than Mg-Fe or Zn-Al components. Calcination temperature in the range 300–600 °C resulted in the high specific surface area, while upper or lower temperature reduced the values. Pore developing agent did not result in dramatic increase in MMO; however, the pore size distribution became narrower in the presence of pore developing agents.
