Synthesis, characterization and antibacterial properties of symmetric 1,1?-ferrocene derived Schiff-base ligands and their Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) chelates
Abstract: Symmetric1,1'-dimethylferrocene derived Schiff-base ligands have been prepared by the condensation reaction of 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with 2-aminopyrazine, 2-aminopyridine and 2-aminothiazole respectively. Their transition metal chelates, of the type [M(L)]Cl 2 [M = Cu(II)] and [M(L)(Cl 2 )] [M = Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II)] have been prepared. The synthesized Schiff-base ligands and their metal(II) chelateshave been characterized by their physical, analytical and spectral data.

“…The measured magnetic moments of Cu-NQ, Cu-CQ and Cu-HQ complexes were 2.06, 2.17 and 1.96 B.M., respectively, which are in agreement with the reported experimental range for Cu(II) octahedral complexes (1.7-2.2 B.M.) [28,29]. A magnetic moment of 1.74 was reported for the Cu(II) complex with an analogous Schiff base (E)-N'-((2-hydroxyquinolin-3-yl) methylene)-4methylbenzenesulfonohydrazide [14].…”

“…, orbital contribution of the magnetic moment is possible. Similarly, the observed values of Cr-NQ, Cr-CQ and Cr-HQ complexes (3.93, 3.77 and 3.75 B.M., respectively) were within the reported range for Cr(III) octahedral complexes which is 3.7-3.9 [28] and µ s.o. (d3, S=3/2) = √ (4(3/2) (3/2+1)) = 3.87.…”

“…These findings are also supported by other reports [39]. In another study, it was reported that the mode of action of cobalt (II) complexes where cobalt (II) affected the electron flow in the entire complexes enables them to easily penetrate into fungal cells [40]. However, these are predicted reasons, and the actual mechanisms of anti-acanthamoebic effects of cobalt nanoparticles need to be determined and studied in detail both in vitro and in vivo.…”

“…Liquid crystalline ferrocene based Schiff bases show interesting magnetic [11] (paramagnetic liquid crystals, control of the molecular orientation in a magnetic field), electrical [12] (one dimensional conductors), strong optical [13] (birefringence, dichroism, and nonlinear optical behaviour) and electrooptical [14] (photoelectric behaviour, ferroelectric electrooptical responses) properties. Many ferrocenyl Schiff base derivatives have been studied for their biological activity and found to be active against microbes and bacteria [15,16]. In our research project, we have synthesized a series of ferrocnyl Schiff bases as materials with great potentials in the field of metallomesogens.…”
