Synthesis and properties of poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites using natural montmorillonite and synthetic Fe‐montmorillonite by emulsion polymerization

Abstract: In this article, Fe-montmorillonite (Fe-MMT) was synthesized by hydrothermal method. For the first time, Fe-MMT was modified by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/Fe-MMT nanocomposites were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Then poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA)/ natural montmorillonite (Na-MMT) and PMMA/Fe-MMT nanocomposites were compared by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ther… Show more

“…It has also been noticed that their nanometric size made them suitable for synergistic effects with organoclays, allowing thermal and fire behavior performances to be improved. In the present work, the Fe-montmorillonite was firstly hydrothermal synthesized [9,16,17] and then was modified by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The difference between Fe-MMT and natural MMT was that Fe (III) ion replaced Al (III) ion in the crystal lattice of the MMT.…”

“…27 TGA is a technique in which changes in physical and chemical properties of materials are measured as a function of increasing temperature (with constant heating rate), or as a function of time (with constant temperature and/or constant mass loss). [59][60][61] In order to examine the thermal stability, thermal analyses were carried out on the PMMA/STMO composites as well as on pure PMMA for comparison. Figure 7 shows the TG curve recorded for the pure PMMA (a) and for PMMA/STMO composites (10 to 50 wt.%) (b-f) in nitrogen atmosphere (flow rate: 60 ml min À1 Þ, at a heating rate of 10 C min À1 .…”

“…This may be because of the SDS within the LDH, which has hydrophobic functional groups that might help MH to disperse evenly in the EVA matrix. The LDHs could then act as dispersants during the melt blending of MH with EVA and thus help MH particles to disperse homogenously in the EVA [9].…”
