Synthesis and characterization of sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol/zinc oxide/iron oxide nanocomposites for electrochemical applications

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites films, based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) complexed with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and iron oxide nanorods (Fe 3 O 4 NRs) as nanofiller, were prepared by solution casting technique. Different techniques were used to describe the prepared films.XRD and FTIR were used to pinpoint the complexation of the nanofiller with the polymer mixture. The XRD investigation verified the existence of the crystalline peaks of ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 NPs in the polymeric matrices. … Show more

“…When findings from XRD and TEM are compared, the average particle size of nanomaterial samples from XRD results is bigger than that obtained from TEM results because XRD results reveal the crystallite size, but TEM results offer the particle size that may consist of more than one crystallite. 22…”

“…20,21 High tensile strength, degradability, flexibility, and non-toxicity are all characteristics of this material. 22 However, it is also important to consider that PVA has weak moisture barrier qualities and a low rate of bio-degradation. Most typically, PVA is modified with CMC as a hybrid system to save costs and enhance its eco-friendliness.…”

“…When there are hydroxyl groups, the NaAlg forms a hydrogen bond with the other polymers (such as PVA) and interacts with them 14–16 . NaAlg is a contender for use in a variety of industries, including papermaking, pharmaceuticals, electrical devices and food packaging, due to its exceptional characteristics 17 . Because the side chains of the PVA backbone include a hydroxyl (OH) group, this polymer interacts well with other polymers and biopolymers that also contain functional groups such as NaAlg to form miscible polymer blends.…”

“…[14][15][16] NaAlg is a contender for use in a variety of industries, including papermaking, pharmaceuticals, electrical devices and food packaging, due to its exceptional characteristics. 17 Because the side chains of the PVA backbone include a hydroxyl (O H) group, this polymer interacts well with other polymers and biopolymers that also contain functional groups such as NaAlg to form miscible polymer blends. It is possible that using a single biopolymer will not provide adequate mechanical flexibility or chemical or electrical or optical characteristics.…”
