Synoptic and Mesoscale Analysis of a Severe Weather Event in Southern Brazil at the End of June 2020

Abstract: At the end of June 2020, an explosive extratropical cyclone was responsible for an environment in which a squall line developed and caused life and economic losses in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. The aims of this case study are the following: (a) to describe the drivers of the cyclogenesis; (b) to investigate through numerical simulations the contribution of sea–air interaction to the development of the cyclone as an explosive system; and (c) to present the physical properties of the clouds associate… Show more

“…They are influenced by various factors, such as the intense baroclinicity associated with strong horizontal temperature gradients, high moisture availability, ocean heat fluxes, and strong jet streams [6][7][8]. These cyclones cause high-impact weather, such as heavy precipitation, strong winds, and abrupt temperature changes [9]. The momentum exchange between the atmosphere and the ocean is responsible for generating maritime agitation [10], leading to storm surges and giant waves that can disrupt navigation and offshore operations and cause coastal area destruction.…”

“…Ref. [9] studied the same event using observational and numerical data. These authors attributed the impacts in Santa Catarina to a pre-frontal squall line generated by the EC.…”

“…Despite their important role in the climatic system, many cyclones can also cause extreme weather events such as intense precipitation, strong winds, and abrupt temperature changes. Over the ocean, air-sea momentum exchange is responsible for maritime agitation, which can lead to the occurrence of storm surges and giant waves, causing disruptions to navigation, operations on oil platforms, and the destruction of coastal ecosystems and infrastructure (Rocha et al 2004, Gramcianinov et al 2020, Faria et al 2023.…”

“…Além disso, Faria et al (2023) analisaram a ocorrência de uma linha de instabilidade associada a um ciclone extratropical explosivo, ocasionando perdas econômicas e até de vidas no estado de Santa Catarina.…”
