Synergistic reinforcing of poly(lactic acid) by poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) and alumina nanoparticles

Abstract: Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) blends and PLA/PBAT/Al2O3 nanocomposites were fabricated via solution blending. The influence of PBAT and Al2O3 content on the thermal stability, flexural properties, impact strength, and morphology of both the PLA/PBAT blends and the PLA/PBAT/Al2O3 nanocomposites were investigated. The impact strength of the PLA/PBAT/Al2O3 nanocomposites containing 5 wt% PBAT increased from 4.3 to 5.2 kJ/m2 when the Al2O3 content increased fr… Show more

“…Moreover, alumina nanofiller in PLA makes it mechanically robust and provides rigidness [169]. A wide range of dental and orthopedic materials is made of alumina nanofiller-PLA nanocomposites due to the presence of an ester group in PLA, which enables a strong bond with alumina [170]. A coating of alumina on PLA is also used for biomedical equipment.…”

“…Figure 4 illustrates the thermal degradation behaviors of the systems. Thermal stability factors, including the initial decomposition temperature (i.e., the temperature of 5% weight loss [T 5% ]), the temperature of 10% weight loss (T 10% ), and the amount of char formation at 800 C, were determined from the TGA thermograms, 34,35 and the results are listed in Table 1.…”

“…Figure 11 shows the thermal degradation behavior of the composites as a function of the Si@EG content. Thermal stability factors, such as the initial decomposition temperature and the amount of char formation at 800 C, were estimated from the TGA thermograms, [48][49][50] and the results are summarized in Table 1.…”
