Synchronous bilateral renal cell carcinomas with differing histologies

Abstract: Introduction Bilateral renal cell carcinomas with different histological types are rare. We report herein the first description of bilateral renal carcinomas with clear cell renal cell carcinoma and mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma occurring synchronously. Case presentation A 62‐year‐old man was referred to our hospital with bilateral renal tumors. The tumors on each side showed different findings from both contrast‐enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The tumors were partial… Show more

“…Type I tumors show chromosome 7p and 17p gains, and type 2 tumors show allelic imbalance of one or more of chromosomes 1p, 3p, 5, 6, 8, 9p, 10, 11, 15, 18, and 22. In addition, bilateral synchronous renal cell carcinomas with different histology have been reported in the literature with approximately 6% of the cases presenting as ccRCC with contralateral PRCC, which was also observed in our case [14].…”

“…Histological analysis of the left renal mass indicated the presence of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The synchronous diagnosis of bilateral renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) is relatively rare, occurring in only 1–5 % of cases [ 4 , 11 ]. According to a case report, bilateral clear cell renal cell carcinomas constituted the predominant histological subtype at 73 %, followed by bilateral papillary renal cell carcinoma at 16 %.…”

“…Renal sarcomas can originate from various kidney components, including the smooth muscle fibers of the renal parenchyma, renal capsule, renal pelvis, and renal vessels [ 3 ]. The synchronous diagnosis of bilateral renal cancers (RCCs) occurs in 1 % to 5 % of cases [ 4 ]. Managing bilateral renal masses presents a surgical challenge, with the goal being the preservation of renal mass without resorting to dialysis [ 5 ].…”

“…Shigehisa et al successfully treated synchronous bilateral renal tumors with different histology 1 . The one was pT1b clear cell carcinoma, and the other was pT1a mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma, both were treated by robot‐assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) sequentially in 3 months interval.…”
