Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the synanthropy of Diptera: Calliphoridae, insects of forensic importance, in Calabria (southern Italy). The study lasted 2 years, from February 2010 to January 2012, and was carried out in three areas of Cosenza province representing “urban”, “rural”, and “wild” environments. Bottle traps baited with pork were used to catch Calliphoridae. Six species were identified, Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy 1830, Calliphora vomitoria (L.), Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann 1819… Show more

“…However, due to the wide variability in these results according to landscape, the authors concluded that they cannot be used as evidence of cadaver relocation. The same conclusion can be drawn from the results obtained by Greco et al in Italy (71). The authors showed differences in the abundances of Calliphoridae by month of sampling.…”

“…Although it is present in both rural and urban habitats, C. vicina tends to be found predominantly in shady and urban areas (14,52,71). In contrast, C. vomitoria is often described as a more rural species that avoids cities (84,85,120,133,144).…”

“…Several studies have described the detrimental impact of urbanization on abundance, species richness, and community composition in different groups of insects (for example, Gibb & Hochuli 2002, Martinson & Raupp 2013, Greco et al 2014. Some of these works have particularly focused on necrophagous Diptera, especially on species of the family Calliphoridae, which are important in the degradation of organic matter (for example, Figueroa-Roa & Linhares 2002, De Souza & Zuben 2012, Pinilla Beltran et al 2012.…”
