Symbiotic essential amino acids provisioning in the American cockroach,Periplaneta americana(Linnaeus) under various dietary conditions

Abstract: Insect gut microbes have been shown to provide nutrients such as essential amino acids (EAAs) to their hosts. How this symbiotic nutrient provisioning tracks with the host’s demand is not well understood. In this study, we investigated microbial essential amino acid (EAA) provisioning in omnivorous American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana), fed low-quality (LQD) and comparatively higher-quality dog food (DF) diets using carbon stable isotope ratios of EAAs (δ13CEAA). We assessed non-dietary EAA input, quant… Show more

“…The ability of some bacteria to provide essentials amino acids is well documented in insects (Douglas, ), however no cases of nutritional symbiosis have been recorded so far among lepidopterans (McCutcheon & Moran, ; Ayayee et al ., ). The results achieved in this study may pave the way for future studies to investigate the role of Burkholderia and other bacteria of the P. interpunctella microbiota in supporting the host development.…”

“…An important general fitness contribution of microbiomes to their hosts is carrying out metabolic processes that the animal or plant cannot carry out by themselves [ 59 ]. There are many examples: nitrogen fixation in legumes [ 60 ], cellulose degradation in ruminants [ 61 ], termites [ 62 ] and cockroaches [ 63 ], essential amino acid synthesis in insects [ 64 ], photosynthesis by microalgae in corals, mollusks and sponges [ 65 ], and oxidation of inorganic compounds [ 66 ] and hydrocarbons in deep-sea invertebrates [ 67 ].…”

“…Regarding AA ESS , recent studies on invertebrates [66][67][68] and vertebrates [35,69] show that dietary protein is not the sole source of AA ESS used to build and maintain animal tissues. Because eukaryotic consumers cannot synthesize AA ESS de novo, they should directly route dietary AA ESS into their tissues, resulting in ∆ 13 C C-D values of~0‰ ; however, this fundamental expectation has not always been met in controlled experiments.…”
