Expansive soils exhibit greater volume change with variation in moisture content. In this study, an attempt has been made to reuse the waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads as an environmentally friendly additive to mitigate the swelling potential. The swelling behaviour of expansive soil was examined with and without EPS geobeads inclusions. Several swell-compression tests were carried out on one-dimensional large consolidation apparatus (LCA) which can accommodate the California bearing ratio (CBR) mould. The swelling characteristics of remoulded soil specimens were evaluated with the addition of 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% geobeads content (gc) by the dry weight of the soil. The test result shows that the increase in gc from 0.25 to 1%, there is a gradual decrease in the vertical swelling potential (i.e. percent swell and swelling pressure). A higher recycled gc inclusion up to 1% could be preferable to reduce maximum swelling potential, where compressional deformations are not of primary concern.

This study presents the micro-physical investigation of polypropylene (PP) fiber-reinforced, and silica fume (SF) stabilized expansive soil (BC) subgrade. The coupling effect of soil, PP fiber, and SF has been evaluated under the freezing-thawing (F-T) cycle to assess the durability of treated BC Soil. The curing method and duration staggeringly influence the strength of SF treated BC soil; therefore, three different curing method, i.e., moisture-controlled curing (MC), gunny bag curing (GC), and water submerged curing (SC) to a period of 7, 14, and 28 days were considered. The BC soil has been reinforced with 0.25%, 0.50%, and 1.00% PP fiber and stabilized with 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% SF. The physical, chemical, and microstructural properties were determined before and after 2,4,6,8,10 F-T cycles. With the increase in SF content, the unconfined compressive strength of the expansive soil has been increased due to the formation of Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) gel. The chemically inert, hydrophobic, non-corrosive nature, and higher tensile strength of PP fiber, it has a higher potential to reinforce the BC soil for durability under tensile failure. This research confirms the possibility of incorporating SF and PP Fiber in road work applications, with significant environmental benefits.

The logical coherence macro–micro experiments about the anti‐swelling performance of polyetheramine‐230 (PEA‐230) on expansive natural soil are presented in this paper. Further, the expansion of the soil in the solution and water system is considered. Great significance in treating the expansive soil broadens the applied range of polyetheramine‐230. The mechanism is assessed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) in the state of wet and dry montmorillonite (Mt), XRD of dry clay extracts from the soil, zeta potential measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results prove the significant effect of controlling the expansion of expansive soil. PEA‐230 strongly adsorbs on the surface of soil particles and intercalates into the layer structure. Further, the PEA‐230/soil hybrids can be judged as usable engineering soil with low expansion characteristics. Additionally, the concentration of PEA‐230 controls the treatment effect, and 1 wt% PEA‐230 is a proper concentration to treat the expansive soil. In particular, PEA‐230 has excellent characteristics such as small molecular weight, good water solubility, and good stability. Thus PEA‐230 can be regarded as a great agent to treat in‐situ expansive soil.
